(In case anyone is wondering, the game vital brain cell exercise being played in the above picture is Scotland Yard, one of Everett Kaser’s thoroughly addictive logic puzzle games for PCs and Macs. Highly recommended!)

Music & Macs

I'm a Mac.

I'm a Mac.

It's all about the music.

It's just all about the music.

Gunnison has feline asthma.

A couple of months ago, Gunnison had a really weird spell, during which he appeared to be deathly afraid of just about everything, but most especially of his sister and the room in which their food, water, and litter boxes have been since the cats first came to live with us.

He would cower and slink, very low to the floor, when he moved at all. He wouldn’t go near his sister, and nothing — not even Whiskas fish — would entice him to enter their room. I (only half-jokingly) wondered if maybe he was seeing or sensing something in there that we couldn’t see or sense. We had to put one of the litter boxes and food & water bowls out in the hallway for him. This was totally out of character for him, because he’d always been the outgoing one; the one who got into everything, while Cimmy was the one who hid under the bed.

After a day or so, he’d let Cimmy get near him, and he started acting a little more normally, but he still wouldn’t go in the room. He was lethargic, and just not himself at all. Then we noticed that his breathing seemed to be very fast and I thought I could hear him wheezing. That was when we decided it was time to go see the Nice Vet.

Our cat, Cimarron, curled up in the bathroom sink

Maine Coons love water. And sinks.

Normally she tries to drink from the tap, but sometimes the sink just feels soooo comfy. And it fits her so well.

Of course, it’s a pain to have to use the bathtub tap for hand-washing, but how could one refuse a face like that?

Note to self: hit the “save draft” button BEFORE the cat walks on the keyboard.

I’ve just learned a new keyboard shortcut! Did you know that stepping on OPTION + HOME at the same time will take you to the Firefox home page? And did you know that any unsaved content in Wordpress’s “Add New Post” text window won’t survive the trip?

Ask me how I know.

Bloody cat.

Cats do not support transparency.

Where is the opacity slider on a cat??

Where is the opacity slider on a cat??

We have two lovely Maine Coons. They’re very affectionate. They love being near us. All the time. Every waking (and most sleeping) minute of the day. Regardless of what we’re doing. Especially if we’re sitting down, a posture I frequently adopt when at the computer.

When they were little kittens (as opposed to the miniature lions they are now, still less than a year old), they discovered the joys of the computer desk. When they weren’t prowling / chasing all over it, they were fighting over who got to lie closest to the keyboard and assist with typing (which is great fun, the way the fingers move so quickly! What a neat game!)

So nice warm monitors, a fun little moving thing on the screen and wiggling fingers to chase after, and Mum’s sitting near — what more could a kitty want? Get the whole story »
